Free workshop: Sutton Council procurement

Every year, the authority awards contracts to businesses worth hundreds of thousands of pounds but small, local businesses sometimes struggle to win them because of complex EU and UK procurement rules.

This workshop, organised by the Hackbridge Green Business Network is for local businesses interested in supplying to Sutton Council. It will:

  • Provide an introduction to Sutton Council procurement: The types of products and services currently procured.
  • Explain the procurement process: what is a PQQ, a tender, where do you find them and how to respond to them;
  • Give top tips for businesses: What do Sutton (and other local authorities) look for – e.g. quality, cost, experience, sustainability? Which is most important and where do businesses usually fail?
  • Look at how environmental sustainability is (or isn’t) shaping procurement? Can going green help win new business – now and in the future? Perhaps there are some ambitions for the procurement team of where they would like to see in the future?
  • Consider how businesses can learn from this procurement approach to shape their own procurement process? Looking at sustainable purchasing policies, frameworks such as the Mayors Green Procurement Code and Flexible Framework.

What’s mine is yours

Here's a short video about Collaborative Consumption that describes some new (and traditional) ideas for sharing resources. We have traditional sharing, bartering, lending, trading, renting, gifting, and swapping redefined through technology and peer communities. These ideas help us move towards One Planet lifestyles, and some are much more attractive and easy than others.

We've listed a number of links below that are mentioned in the video, and also chosen some from our waste and materials advice pages.

Sutton Bookshare

Sutton Bookshare is a simple free service that lets local residents list their books on a website and then share them with each other. It's very easy to use and open to everyone who lives or works in the London Borough of Sutton.

Do go and check it out if you like books, or want to get reading more: www.suttonbookshare.org.uk

Bookshare is part of a wider project called Sutton Open Library that’s about opening up the library service to innovation. The aim is to inspire people to read more. The Bookshare website also encourages use of Sutton's libraries and provides links to where you can buy the books directly.

The service was designed by local resident, Adrian Short, and funded through a grant from NESTA (a charity distributing lottery money) under their Make It Local funding scheme. Adrian Short has written an interesting blog with his thoughts about the project and is well worth a read if you would like to find out more. The scheme isn't popular with everyone though, as Amanda Craig writes in her blog. What do you think about Sutton Book Share, and will you use it?

The Big Lunch this Sunday

The Big Lunch is a very simple idea from the Eden Project. The aim is to get as many people as possible across the whole of the UK to have lunch with their neighbours in a simple act of community, friendship and fun. This year it’s happening on Sunday 5th June and a record number of people are expected to take part.

A Big Lunch can be anything from a few neighbours getting together in the garden or on the street, to a full blown party with food, music and decoration that quite literally stops the traffic.

It's still not too late to organise your own Big Lunch, or better still, go along to someone elses. Visit the Big Lunch website to find one near you.

The Big Lunch @ Sutton Community Farm

One Big Lunch we recommended going to is at Sutton Community Farm on Sunday 5th June from 11-2pm. You are all very welcome and can bring friends and family, there'll also be a bbq and we'll fire up the earth oven for delicious stone baked pizzas too. To find out more, click here

Own a piece of farm in London

Our scrumptious farm project in Sutton has recently had an exciting opportunity for expansion, and you can be involved. But for it to happen, we need to spread this message from Sutton Community Farm founder Anna Francis far and wide….

London’s Community Farm – a crazy idea that might just work?

Have you ever dreamt about owning a place in the country? An amazing opportunity has come up for us to buy some land together in south London: 35 acres including an existing veg farm and nursery, woodlands, farm shop, bungalow, glass houses and polytunnels.

Together we could buy it and convert it into a community farm for people to grow (organic) fruit and veg together, ensure we all have access to fresh affordable healthy produce, share skills, offer training to schools, disability groups and everyone else… and much much more.

The land is £1.15m so we only need 780 of us to pledge £1500 each (or more or less). With 7 million people living in London surely we can do it?! In just the last few days we’ve already raised £450,000. Join the Facebook group to keep updated.

Click here for details of the plot

And here are some examples where communities have got together and bought farms elsewhere e.g. www.thecommunityfarm.co.uk

Time is of the essence: we only found out about the opportunity last week and we need to submit an offer in the next two weeks. At this stage we only need to know if you are willing to pledge – please email me (anna.francis@bioregional.com) with your name and the amount you will pledge. And please forward to as many people as you think might be interested… If we get enough people we will issue a community share offer, if not, we won't go ahead. So what have we got to lose?

More Information

The exact details of the share offer and management haven't been defined yet (we've only had a week!) but there are lots of successful examples which we can emulate and adapt.

Community shares: there are loads of examples of people getting together and buying farms, post offices, wind turbines etc. The way these shares work is that people invest a certain amount, get benefits such as discounted produce, are part of a worthwhile project, get involved in activity days etc (if desired) and the shares can be sold (for original price) if they need the money back.

Management: the farm would be run by the farm team including experienced growers, project manager, training staff and shop assistants. Quarterly steering group meetings would be held to discuss progress and all shareholders would be invited to the Annual General Meeting, as well as regular activity days and events and the opportunity to bring family and friends to visit their farm.

Hackbridge businesses learn how to save energy

Thanks to those who came to our office at BedZED a couple of weeks back for a really interesting workshop on energy use at work and how to save money by reducing it.

For anyone who missed it – see Isabel's presentation below;

BioRegional energy expert Isabel shared her top tips for saving energy. There was lots of idea sharing between businesses present on what they’re doing to save money on energy – Parker & Son butchers (featured in last month's e-news) shared how they swapped ALL of their old-style incandescent light-bulbs to the new energy-saving ones, and Surrey Institute of Hypnotherapy recently insulated their loft following advice from BioRegional, as part of their audit.

Green home competition

Michael Fish and John Kettley, two of the most familiar faces in meteorology, are looking for the household which is making most effort to use energy efficiently. The top prize is £3,000, second place is £1,000. So if you think your home is a good contender, why not submit your home and see if you can win.

The Greenest Home Competition is run by FindaProperty.com and the solar firm HomeSun, that offers free solar panels to homes that have a good roof. HomeSun's vision is to install 50,000 free solar PV systems.

Nigel Lewis from FindaProperty.com said: “We’re seeing more and more people considering in environmental factors when buying a new home and over recent months solar panels have started to emerge as a selling point for some buyers.”

How to enter

The entry deadline is 30th June 2011. As the competition receives more entries, an online league table will monitor results allowing homeowners to see just how well their region is doing. The winner will be announced in July.

Students set up food market

The Big Society is blooming in Hackbridge – a new way for residents to buy good value fruit and vegetables has been set up by enterprising local students working in partnership with the Veg Van. Pupils at Hackbridge Primary School have set up a market stall and are using the opportunity to learn more about healthy eating and the world of business.

Pupils aged 10–11 years will be running the market. One of the keen pupils, Amy Cooper, said: “I think it is a really good idea to help people eat healthily at least once a week. I am really enjoying taking part.”

Seeta Rajani of local charity BioRegional who set up The Veg Van said: “Being a not-for-profit social enterprise we are always looking for new ways to get the local community excited about and involved in locally produced food. The students are our new franchisees! – it’s a great opportunity for them. As the produce is grown down the road at Sutton Community Farm it’s also a great way for families to get fresh veg and cut transport emissions”.

The market times for the Veg Van are currently:

  • Hackbridge Primary School: Tuesdays 3pm – 3.45pm
  • St. Helier hospital Re:treat restaurant:  Wednesdays 12noon – 3pm
  • Hackbridge Station: Wednesdays 4.30pm – 8pm
  • Carshalton Station: Thursdays 4.30pm – 8pm

The Veg Van is part of the three-year One Planet Food project funded by the Big Lottery Local Food Fund, Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, NHS Sutton and Merton, Sutton Council and with in-kind support from Southern Railway. It is part of One Planet Sutton – promoting sustainable council services, sustainable lifestyles and workplaces within the London Borough of Sutton.
