Hackbridge Project Community Forum

Residents and businesses in Hackbridge are invited by Sutton Council to join a new group that will guide the transformation of the suburb into the UK's greenest place to live.

The council is staging the first meeting of the Hackbridge Project Community Forum on Thursday 15 October. It will act as the focal point for local people to have their say on and debate the various schemes and developments that make up the project, the pilot for One Planet Living in Sutton.

The Forum will meet for the first time at Culvers House Primary School in Orchard Avenue between 7pm and 9pm and all local people, businesses and community groups are invited.

Following an introduction by the council's Deputy Leader, Cllr Ruth Dombey, people can hear how the forum will run. They will also hear presentations on plans to redevelop the Felnex Site into hundreds of new, sustainable homes and other facilities.

There will also be a presentation on the Low-Carbon Zone. Sutton is to receive over £200,000 from the Mayor of London that will be used on a package of measures to help at least 700 homes in Hackbridge cut CO2 emissions by over 20% in the next three years.

Consultation on South London Waste Plan

Civic Offices, St. Nicholas Way, Sutton, SM1 1EA

The boroughs of Croydon, Kingston, Merton and Sutton are working together to prepare a Joint Waste Development Plan Document, known as the South London Waste Plan. The South London Waste Plan is the councils' response to European, UK and regional policies and targets to manage waste more sustainably. The key role of the South London Waste Plan is to identify land which is suitable for the development of potential waste management facilities within the four boroughs. This development will reduce the quantity of waste going to landfill and the climate change impacts of this.

Green Guardian Award Entry Deadline

THINK GLOBAL, ACT LOCAL

All across south west London a quiet revolution has begun. In schools, at work, at home people are changing the way they live, work and play. They are motivated by the desire to protect our environment - a priority which becomes ever more urgent as each year passes.

But all is not doom and gloom, bright shoots of hope are springing up everywhere.

From Clapham to Croydon concerned citizens are taking action in their own lives and demanding effective change from their leaders as the government and local councils start to give the environment the priority it deserves.

Across south London the Green Guardian project, a unique partnership bringing together publishers of the Your Local Guardian series, leading councils, businesses and voluntary organisations, has been working to get people involved at a local level.

Tens of thousands of people are now reading the Green Guardian pages in this newspaper every week, and many more are logging on to the website www.greenguardian.co.uk. And it really does work. In a recent readership survey* almost two thirds of respondents said that something they read in the Green Guardian had prompted them into action.

Hundreds of people have also been nominated for a Green Guardian Award over the past two years to thank them for the steps they have taken towards a more sustainable lifestyle and with the 2008 awards now underway, we expect this figure to increase even further.

The challenges ahead are truly daunting, but together we can work miracles. So, why not make this the year you join the green revolution?

You could start by nominating someone for a Green Guardian Award.

The Green Guardian Awards are open to everyone. From cycling to recycling, from working on a community garden to organising a walking bus, from teaching Brownies about nature to starting a green group to cut your company's energy consumption, we want you to nominate anyone you know who is walking the talk. And please don't be shy about putting yourself forward for an award. By taking part you can help encourage and inspire others.

There are lots of categories and the entry process could not be simpler. Simply take a few moments to visit our website and fill out a form online. If you are nominating someone else then fill in a nomination form or for entering yourself, fill out an entry form. Or you can ring Hannah Weston on 020 8744 4223, or email her at hweston@london.newsquest.co.uk and she will send you a form.

As the Chinese sage Lao Tzu said: "The journey of 10,000 miles starts with a single step"
