Took place on Monday February 25 2008
Hackbridge Week got off to a good start. At the launch on February 27th at All Saints Church, a packed group from different parts of the community and the major stakeholders deliberated the principles that should guide new development, and the kinds of projects that were needed in the short term.
The event was kicked off by the Deputy Leader Councillor Colin Hall, who stressed the role that Sutton was playing inenvironmental initiatives, including the European Union’s 2020 project to cut carbon emissions and increase the use of renewable sources of energy by 20%. The aim of the initiative was to shape the area’s future development as a model for a sustainable suburb, and here the results of the process would form part of the Local Development Framework and the Council’s negotiations with the Mayor and Greater London Authority. In doing so it had to address local issues, which include community safety, traffic and floods.
Sue Riddlestone, co-founder of BioRegional, which now employs over 40 people locally, explained the principles of One Planet Living, which is the theme of a number of workshops during the week. Living with the capacity of our planet will require major shifts in behaviour. The Hackbridge Initiative offers a good opportunity to apply some of these principles on Bio-Regional’s doorstep.

Tom Jeffrey, Director for Environment and Leisure, thanked everyone for taking part, including a range of distinguished guests, including the leading architect Sir Richard MacCormac and Andrew Armes, who has been in charge of urban design at Milton Keynes. He introduced the series of workshops that were aimed to capture local concerns and interests, and also to raise aspirations for the future. He raised the key issues of how to ensure local people benefited from development and are fully engaged in the process.
