Sustainable Transport Workshop

The workshop was facilitated by Tom Brake MP and attended by local residents and transport experts. The aim was to come up with ideas to deliver a 66% reduction in CO2 from transport from Sutton residents by 2020.

For more targets and strategies read our transport report for Sutton - pop in to 24 Helios Road, BedZED to read a copy or download a PDF.

The workshop began with a presentation then walk around Hackbridge to identify good elements of the transport system and areas for imrovement. Photos to follow...

The following actions to make transport more sustainable were identified:

Action 3.1 A hale and ride electric bus (preferable powered using renewable energy) or bio-diesel fuelled busses using locally grown crops.
Responsibility Transport for London and local bus operators

Action 3.2 Grow bio-crops on marginal and contaminated land, for example along the railway line and on the filled landfill. An example was given of the Mumbai to Delhi line, where along the tracks jatropha is planted to help power the trains.

Responsibility Landowners and potentially an ESCo

Action 3.3 Reduce the need to drive by providing more leisure, work and shopping facilities locally.
Responsibility LB Sutton Planning team and developers

Action 3.4 Turn the pathway from Beddington park to Mitcham Common into an official cycle route. Also to make the access point to it at Mile Road cycle (and pram)-friendly
Responsibility Thames Water (landowner), LB Sutton, TFL and support/ advice from Sustrans?

Action 3.5 Wrythe Petrol Station to stock bio-diesel and have charging points for electric cars (charged using renewables)
Responsibility Wrythe Petrol Station

Action 3.6 A sustainable business centre to enable start-ups or home-workers to rent desk space or hot desk. An example would be The Hub in north London. Could be provided in one of the new developments or in existing un-used business spaces.
Responsibility Developers and landlords

Action 3.7 Reinstate Mile Road so that there is pedestrian and cycle access between London Road and Beddington Lane.
Responsibility Thames Water (landowner)

Action 3.8 All new developments to include a car club
Responsibility Developers

Action 3.9 Better cycle parking at stations. For example, Hackbridge Station now has bike racks but it would be better if they were covered.
Responsibility TFL and Southern

Action 3.10 A night bus to serve Hackbridge.
Responsibility TFL

Action 3.11 Raise awareness of the health benefits of cycling and walking
Responsibility PCT/ NHS?

Action 3.12 A bike discount scheme. We could encourage employers to offer tax free bikes through an existing scheme.
