Hackbridge residents have started cutting their carbon and energy bills following 150 free sustainability visits from BioRegional (home visit team pictured left) in March. The visits found that the average Hackbridge resident produces slightly less carbon dioxide than the UK average, however, they still use almost three planets worth of resources, so there's still lots to do!
Luckily there's also lots of enthusiasm to make changes, one householder explained ‘the visit was so useful, I didn't know that as I'm over 70 I can get free insulation!', another commented ‘I didn't realise how much carbon flying produces, I'm going to get the train to Scotland now and am looking forward to catching up with my reading'.
All of the householders received a tailored report outlining their footprint and ideas to reduce their carbon and costs. The visits also found that Hackbridge is a friendly place to live and on average residents know 8 of their neighbours!
If you are interesting in finding out more about the visits or the findings you can download a PDF or contact Anna.
We aim to make Hackbridge the UK's first Sustainable Suburb. Hackbridge Week which ran from Monday 25 February 2008 to Saturday 1st March 2008 was an opportunity for local residents, businesses and other stakeholders to contribute ideas and give feedback on the plans. There will be many more opportunities to contribute, so don't worry if you were not able to attend.
You can read a summary of each event by clicking the links below.

The Planning team at Sutton are writing a Suplementary Planning Document for Hackbridge to ensure any new development is of the highest environmental standards, benefits the local community and improves the appearance of the area. You can read the issues paper online and the final document is scheduled to be ready in 2008/9.
To see which sites are being considered for new sustainable development in Hackbridge, have a look at Appendix A on this Site Development Policies - Issues and Options PDF. The potential Hackbridge development sites are:

A23 East Side of London Road Adjoining Hackbridge Station p81
A24 Land East Of London Road (North of BedZED) p82
A28 Kelvin House, London Road p86

A planning application has been made on the former Kelvin House site. This developer wasn't at Hackbridge Week so residents may not have had a chance to respond. The plans are online and there is also a form you can fill in if you would like to comment on the proposal. It's planning application number C2008/59625.
