Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage at the Westway Beacons, London

image to llustrate this case study

This 128-home social housing development boasts the first UK application of Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage. Sustainable design specialists Fulcrum Consulting recommended the innovative method of taking heat from the underground aquifer in the winter to heat the homes, and put heat back in the summer to cool the homes. It works like a heat pump but is way more efficient. So for one unit of electricity you get 6 units of heat, or 25 to 40 units of coolth! Interseasonal thermal energy storage is also being considered as part of the Zero Carbon Strategy for BioRegional's One Planet Living Z-Squared development.
