The Green Transport Plan at BedZED

image to llustrate this case study

The aim of the Green Transport Plan was to reduce reliance on fossil fuelled private cars and encourage alternative methods of transport. Car mileage at BedZED is roughly half that of the local average.

BedZED hosts London’s first ever car club which is run by City Car Clubs. Car Clubs reduce car ownership and mileage and still offer the convenience of having access to a car whenever you need it and there are also free charging points for electric vehicles

Bike racks are provided outside, or residents can use the sun space for bike storage. However, some of the residents feel that a more secure option is needed, and avoid using the external racks. BioRegional are trialing secure bike lockers for staff and visitors and if these prove successful The Peabody Trust may introduce them for residents.

BioRegional employed a Green Lifestyles Officer to help residents reduce their ecological footprint, and as part of this work, held bike repair sessions, offered personal transport plans and generally encouraged people to walk and cycle or use public transport rather than get in the car.

The Green Transport Plan cost £70,000 to implement but generated a planning gain of £1,160,000 for investment in other innovations because we were able to significantly reduce the number of car parking spaces needed.
