The Living Planet Report shows trends in global populations of terrestrial, marine, and freshwater vertebrate species. The 2006 report shows a decline of 29 per cent from 1970 to 2003. To stem this decline and to maintain current, already degraded, levels of biodiversity, about 30% of the planet needs to be protected for other species and habitats.
The aim of this principle is to conserving existing biodiversity and features and explore opportunities to increase the area's ecological value and our access to nature. The Actions for this principle are covered in Sutton's Biodiversity Action Plan and you can take a look here for things you can do to help.
