Sustainability Action Plan

Equity and Fair Trade

about this principle

Sutton is a relatively affluent, enterprising borough, with diverse communities that are mostly amongst the least deprived areas of England. But inequalities in income, affordable housing and education make it hard for everyone to enjoy a sustainable life. We can create a thriving community that is empowered, inclusive and enterprising.

Communities in Sutton need to form relationships based upon trust and respect that build confidence, both within our own communities and when looking out to those we buy goods and services from. Decent wages for workers in Sutton and Senegal are equally important to our sustainable future.

Empowerment is about determing our own future and being in control. This means local jobs that meet our basic needs such as housing, food and education; it's about sharing common wealth such as knowledge and tools; and it means meaningful participation in political life.

A sustainable Sutton will also be inclusive, providing goods and services that are accessible to everyone. Tackling inequalities from income to physical access will help everyone fully participate in this thriving community. A thriving, equitable local economy based upon our own enterprise is the mark of an empowered, inclusive Sutton.
