Below is the Sustainability Action Plan for Sustainable Transport
This is only the Plan so far, and more actions are always being added by us and by you, as ideas on this site. Vote on all the new ideas we are considering on the Ideas page.
Some of the actions below you can do right away, and others are long-term actions that may need some organisation or funding to get underway. They are all equally important!
Buy a reconditioned bike or donate your old one
If you would like a reconditioned bike because your budget doesn't extend to a new one, or you have a reasonable quality unwanted bike gathering dust in your garden shed should contact Michael or Gareth at BikeStreet on 020 8404 1520 or by emailing bikestreet@ecolocal.org.uk

Stay fit and healthy and save C02 by walking and cycling
Walking and cycling are the best options, for health, and saving money and CO2 emissions. Regular exercise, such as cycling, can halve the chance of suffering from heart disease, the single largest cause of death in Britain, and can provide protection from strokes, diabetes and certain types of cancer.

There is also a Cyclists Touring Club in Hackbridge which meet outside the Parkside Café in Beddington Park at 2pm every Saturday (Sept onwards meets every 3rd Saturday). Contact David on 020 8669 1693
For information on lead and group walks in your area, contact the Ramblers Association. There is a Sutton and Wandle Valley Wanderers local group that runs short walks of no more than 4 miles distance. (Tel: 020 8641 4339)

Fly less... or not at all!
Flying emits at least three times more CO2 per passenger mile than other transport options such as trains or coaches.

Smarter Driving
If you do have to drive there are several things you can do to reduce your costs and impact, for example, the Department for Transport estimate that by driving efficiently, such as ensuring your tyres are always at the right pressure, you could save £120 a year.

Car share
If you can't give up your car you may like to consider sharing journeys with local friends and neighbours and splitting your fuel costs.

Did you know that by joining a car club, which enables you to have access to a car when you need one, without the hassle of having to pay for your own vehicle, you could save up to £2,000 a year! On average each car club vehicle displaces at least 10 privately owned cars.
