Sustainability Action Plan

Sustainable Water

the Action Plan for this principle

Below is the Sustainability Action Plan for Sustainable Water

This is only the Plan so far, and more actions are always being added by us and by you, as ideas on this site. Vote on all the new ideas we are considering on the Ideas page.

Some of the actions below you can do right away, and others are long-term actions that may need some organisation or funding to get underway. They are all equally important!

Action you can take now:

Fit flow regulators to your taps and remember to fill the basin rather than running the tap when washing up or cleaning vegetables.

Action you can take now:

Reduce flood riskI

If you are in a flood area there are lots of things you can do to reduce the impact of local flooding to your home, these include:

• Register with the Environment Agency's flood warning scheme
• Get some drainage bungs for drains, sinks and toilets
• Using water resistant paint for the lower portions of internal walls
• Storing valuables and paper work up stairs if possible
• Relacating meters and boiler above flood level

If you would like any further information contact the Environment Agency's Floodline on 0845 988 1188

Action you can take now:

Keep your garden or use porous paving

Flooding is a serious issue in Sutton - as we saw in July 2007 (see photo of Wallington station!). One way we can reduce flood risk is by making sure there are lot of porous surfaces that the water can escape through (such as grass or soil) - not paving over your front garden is also a really important way to prevent localised flooding.

In London alone front gardens covering an area 22 times the size of Hyde Park are covered up increasing flood risk and reducing havens for wildlife.

Action you can take now:

A hosepipe uses 1000 litres of water an hour! Reduce your water consumption and benefit your plants by fitting a water butt and using rainwater in a watering can on the garden. You can get a discounted water butt by phoning 0208 668 6666 and mention the 'Sutton and East Surrey Water Customer Offer' or order online.
