Below is the Sustainability Action Plan for Natural Habitats and Wildlife
This is only the Plan so far, and more actions are always being added by us and by you, as ideas on this site. Vote on all the new ideas we are considering on the Ideas page.
Some of the actions below you can do right away, and others are long-term actions that may need some organisation or funding to get underway. They are all equally important!
Volunteer to improve your local environment, learn new skills and meet likeminded people
• Consider volunteering for a conservation charity such as BTCV - they work with local communities to improve the biodiversity and local environment of 20,000 places in the UK including some in or near Sutton. Volunteering can provide you with a great day out and really useful experience too. www2.btcv.org.uk t: 01302 388 883
• Sutton Ecology Centre also has a programme of conservation volunteering working on green sites across the borough of Sutton

• The Wandle Trust also arranges events bringing together volunteers to help clean up the River Wandle. t: 0845 092 0110

Encourage wildlife in your garden.
• Leave an undisturbed area of garden or a log pile
• Plant native flowering plants to attract insects
• Avoid the use of garden chemicals where possible
• Provide food and water for birds
• Avoid garden products containing peat - using peat destroys rare wildlife habitats and releases CO2 that was stored safely away in the ground.
• Provide habitats for birds, bats and insects.
• Make sure the wood products you buy are made from sustainably managed forests (e.g. certified by the FSC) this also reduces the impact on wildlife globally as it means it has not been sourced by destroying rain forests.

Wandle Valley Interactive Map
This is the opportunity for anyone and everyone to have their say about the potential for the Wandle Valley Regional Park: www.wandlevalleypark.org.uk
A short questionnaire is followed by the map where you can drag and drop the comments box to a specific area (which you can zoom in and out from) and make your suggestion, or raise an issue, or even highlight your favourite sections of the Wandle Valley. The comments will all be collated and will inform the Spatial Strategy and Implementation Plan for the Wandle Valley Regional Park, due to be launched this summer.
The deadline for making comments through this website is 31st March 2008
