Solar Powered Community Centre

Last year the roof of the All Saints Community Centre in Hackbridge was fitted with 16 photovoltaic solar panels as part of Sutton Council’s Low Carbon Zone initiative.  The centre is now reaping the benefits with 1000kWh of electricity being produced in the first 6 months and it is hoped that this solar electricity production will help to offset the centre’s large energy bills.
All Saints is one of six community buildings in the Hackbridge Low Carbon Zone (LCZ) that received free energy-saving measures and advice under the LCZ programme.  This has included cavity wall insulation, replacement boilers, energy-efficient lighting, smart meters and solar panels and the measures are expected to save around 20 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Saving Energy at BedZED

Saving Energy has never been so much fun!  Local residents played a series of games including mini-golf and badminton at BedZED last Wednesday.   The games were used to highlight key energy facts and tips to inspire and build confidence about cutting energy bills at home and influencing family and friends to reduce their carbon footprints.  Participants learned seven easy steps to save energy whilst competing in a series of lively activities.  They also went on a guided tour of the new multi-media One Planet Experience exhibition which features the energy bike, one of the many interactive exhibits to inspire visitors to save energy and reduce waste.  The event was organised by BioRegional and The U
The workshop was the first of a series of events BioRegional will be running in association with One Planet Experience over the next 12 months.  Look out for the next event in January on Draughtproofing your home.

Free workshop: Sutton Council procurement

Every year, the authority awards contracts to businesses worth hundreds of thousands of pounds but small, local businesses sometimes struggle to win them because of complex EU and UK procurement rules.

This workshop, organised by the Hackbridge Green Business Network is for local businesses interested in supplying to Sutton Council. It will:

  • Provide an introduction to Sutton Council procurement: The types of products and services currently procured.
  • Explain the procurement process: what is a PQQ, a tender, where do you find them and how to respond to them;
  • Give top tips for businesses: What do Sutton (and other local authorities) look for – e.g. quality, cost, experience, sustainability? Which is most important and where do businesses usually fail?
  • Look at how environmental sustainability is (or isn’t) shaping procurement? Can going green help win new business – now and in the future? Perhaps there are some ambitions for the procurement team of where they would like to see in the future?
  • Consider how businesses can learn from this procurement approach to shape their own procurement process? Looking at sustainable purchasing policies, frameworks such as the Mayors Green Procurement Code and Flexible Framework.

The Big Lunch this Sunday

The Big Lunch is a very simple idea from the Eden Project. The aim is to get as many people as possible across the whole of the UK to have lunch with their neighbours in a simple act of community, friendship and fun. This year it’s happening on Sunday 5th June and a record number of people are expected to take part.

A Big Lunch can be anything from a few neighbours getting together in the garden or on the street, to a full blown party with food, music and decoration that quite literally stops the traffic.

It's still not too late to organise your own Big Lunch, or better still, go along to someone elses. Visit the Big Lunch website to find one near you.

The Big Lunch @ Sutton Community Farm

One Big Lunch we recommended going to is at Sutton Community Farm on Sunday 5th June from 11-2pm. You are all very welcome and can bring friends and family, there'll also be a bbq and we'll fire up the earth oven for delicious stone baked pizzas too. To find out more, click here

Tree planting event in Sutton

There is a tree planting project happening in Sutton on the week starting Monday 17th January until Sunday 23rd, and your help is required!

So if you fancy getting your hands dirty, pop down to the Reigate Avenue Recreational Ground during the week and volunteer supervisors will be on hand to help you. No equipment required except your good self. During the week several school groups will also be helping plant the trees.

When?

Monday 17th January until Sunday 23rd

Where?

The park is the 'Reigate Avenue Recreational Ground' commonly known as the Daisy Field (click here for a map).

This park runs between the A217 (or Reigate Road as it is there) and Forest Road in Sutton (just down from the big Rose Hill roundabout). It is also bounded by the railway line and some residential streets off Sutton Common Road. You can use SM4 6LS as a fairly close streetmap reference if necessary. Most of the work (and the Tuesday session) will be at the Forest Road end which is better for parking if you are using a car. The park can also be easily reached from either Sutton Common Station or St.Helier Station (it's about halfway between the two) on the Sutton/Wimbledon loop. The 470 bus also goes along Forest road, right past the park and will drop you directly outside the gate if you ask the driver nicely! I believe there are more buses the go along Reigate Road as well.

Be a volunteer supervisor

If you're interested in helping out by being a volunteer supervisor, there is a preliminary training/orientation session on Tuesday 11th January at 1:30 PM (in the park at the Forest Road end). This will be to explain to supervisors exactly what trees are going where and demonstrate how to successfully plant them.

About the project

This project is being organised by the 4 Square Panel in St Helier Ward, Sutton, with funding from Sutton Council and the Greater London Authority as part of the Mayor's Re:Leaf London campaign which kicks of on Wednesday 12th Jan.

Around 300 trees (14 different native species) will be planted as part of this project.

Sutton to become a transition town?

A new Transition Town group may be about to start in Sutton and you can be involved…

Transition Towns are community-led responses to the pressures of climate change, fossil fuel depletion and increasingly, economic contraction. They can be large cities, small villages or any area in between – and the ways in which local communities will undertake transition will very much depend on local conditions.

The movement is only 6 years old – but already there are over 300 Transition Towns in the UK and thousands worldwide.

Transition Towns follow a rough process that has 12 stages, culminating in an ‘Energy Descent Plan’ which involves local residents in specific projects including local food production, transport, energy use etc. In this way members of communities work together to build a resilient future.

For residents to live One Planet lifestyles in Sutton, it's clear we need a patchwork of different activities and projects to help achieve this change so One Planet Sutton is looking forward to seeing Transition Sutton.

If it sounds like something that's for you, there are three film screenings and discussions to discuss the scope of forming Transition Sutton, starting on 13th November (details below).

What's happening?

A film is being shown at 7.30pm on Saturday 13 November at All Saints Community Centre, New Road, Hackbridge to introduce the concept of Transition Towns and explore how this can work within Sutton. Doors open 7.00pm. All welcome and free entry. Further film nights will be on 13 December and 13 January.

The Big Climate Connection

What is it?

On Saturday 6th November at 9am, local community member Carl Jobson is organising a meeting with Paul Burstow MP for Sutton and Cheam as part of the Big Climate Connection. This is a campaign organised by the Stop Climate Chaos coalition that aims to connect in your community, connect with your MP, and connect the issues to stop climate chaos.

It’s a key time for climate politics: in just three weeks there are UN Climate Talks in Cancun, Mexico and at this time a new UK Energy Bill will be before Parliament. To find out more about what is being asked for by this particular campaign action visit http://www.stopclimatechaos.org/the-big-connection

The meeting will be between 15 minutes and half an hour. You don't need to be an expert of climate change or campaigning, just someone who cares about this issue and wants to do something about it.

Where do I go?

Cafe Nero, 2 Carshalton Rd, Sutton, Surrey SM1 4RA. Click here for a map.
